Madatory Gear
The Gear: (mandatory) May 10/11 2008
Full Time Team Gear
1. Satellite Phone/Tracking Device (provided by the Kayak Lake Mead)
2. 1st Aid Kit:
- electrolyte tablets or capsules
- tweezers (one that will pull out a cactus needle)
- "Sharpie Permanent Marker" (strongly suggested for marking your maps) and back up writing utensils (pens and pencils).
Full Time Individual
- signal mirror (with sighting hole)
- waterproof matches and or lighter (sealed in dry bag or 2 ea zip-locs)
- base layer long sleeve shirt
Bike Leg - no bike leg this year (2008)
Kayak Leg
- kayak OR canoe (one seat per participant)
- pump or bail bucket (per seat not just per boat)
- 15' to 20' of bow line per kayak
- headlamp w/flashing capibility (per boat)
The Gear: (optional)
Coasteering/Swimming Leg
- boogie board, inflatible boogie board or raft or wear your pfd
- wet suit or swim skin (Desert weather is variable in May, the water may be low 60's or it could be high 60's.)
Suggested Equipment
The items listed here have made the difference between success (had the item) or failure (didn't have the item) of teams in past adventure races.
- headlamp (everyone will need this and it is mandatory on the paddling )
- waterproof map case (one per team, two is strongly suggested)
- "Sharpie Permanent Marker" (strongly suggested for marking your maps)
- dry bag or heavy duty trash bag on the coasteering leg
- 10' of 3mm or 4mm cord for the coasteering/swimming leg for towing your dry bag
- spray skirt(s) on the kayak leg (very useful item if the weather gets bad)
- anything else you can think of
Give good consideration to a means of preventing hypothermia. The water may be cold on this race course.
