The Desert Winds Results
2008
Desert Winds 2008 was staged at Temple Bar, AZ.
2007
This race started at Rosie's Cafe on US 93, a desolute place in the desert. There would be 23 CP's on a course of mtbiking, coasteering, swimming, portaging, bike ferrying, paddling, a paddle 0-course, more paddling, 60 miles in total, and then another 18 OP's on the final O-Course of 30 miles.
The legs went something like this; mtbike (~28 miles), coasteer/swim/bike ferry (~6 miles), paddle and paddle & trek O-course (~26 miles), and the final rogaine finish (~30 miles).
The first leg was a brutally hard 28 mile mtbike leg on mining roads and washes. It was hot (over 100 degress F) and few teams took enough water. Leg 2 was a 2 mile coasteer with a half-mile open water swim, a kayak portage, a bike ferry, and a bike portgage. The water was around 53 degrees F. Some teams got hypothermic. Leg 3 was a nine or so mile paddle to a paddle and trek O-course of side canyons, thick vegetation, and steep difficult rocky terrain, finishing with another five mile paddle. Finally, teams arrived to the somewhat optional Monster O-Course, a thirty mile o-course of difficult terrain and technically hard navigation. In one area of heavy iron deposits, compasses didn't even work. Teams originally needed to get five O (optional) points. But this was relaxed to "just get out there" on the final O-course and get one OP.
